Why do we anoint with oil?
James 5:13-14 Is any among you sick? Let him call on the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
God’s power is all mighty. If you were to look at God, you would go blind. He would send you to someone to heal you, but the power of His presence, is that powerful. He never would want to harm us, but because of His awesome power, He must be careful with us, as not to have us mess up and get to close and get killed by accident, because of His awesome power.
What does the oil do? It does the same thing for us in anointing, that it does for the things we use. When we use oil in a car motor, it is so we can bring two things together. Bring power out of them, without one metal that is not moving harming the other that is. It allows us to bring two objects close together, that with out it, it would be impossible because they would destroy each other. When we anoint with oil, in the name of the Lord, it allows God a place to come closer to us, without His awesome power harming us.
You can think of many ways we use oil in the natural, and God has us use it the same for Him. We use it for our lamps, to light our way at night. With oil we can bring two things close enough together that we can have power that does not harm the things giving the power.
We even use oil to magnify the suns rays, to achieve that tropical tan we look for. Oil is an electrical insulator. It allows us to bring two completely different coils of wire together, so close, the power from one coil of wire produces its power in to the other, increasing or decreasing the power coming out of the other. It is called a Transformer, it is a device that allow us to bring two electrical conductors so close together, and without the oil they would explode. Oil has a very special power. And the ways we use it, are the same way God would use it.The slickest oil in the world, comes from the inside of a whale. There is no oil that is man made that will come close to the oil that comes from a whale. Men for years hunted the whales for a lot of things, but the oil that came from the whale was the most valuable thing that came from the harvest.
Maybe if they had used it for anointing in the name of the Lord, it would have taken them back to doing God’s will on earth?
I do not think God had Jonah spend three days and nights in the whales belly for nothing? Jonah delivered God’s message to Nineveh that allowed the city to change and save themselves.
