Honor father and mother, and obey God?
Matthew 15:3-4 He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? “For God commanded saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’
Luke 2:42- And when He was twelve years old, they went to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it; but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. Now so it was that after three days they found Him, in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.” And He said to them, ”Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business? But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.
The Bible is clear when it tells us to honor our mother and father. It is also very clear that we are to obey God. And there is a very clear difference in the two words. When Jesus set out to listen and ask questions from the teachers in Jerusalem, He showed them not only did He know their worldly wisdom, but He had understanding of it, that amazed them at the young age of twelve years.
But did He dishonor His mother and Joseph when they found Him? Jesus honored them and showed respect by telling them exactly what He was led by God to do.
As we grow older about the age of twelve, we a have an ability to start to follow God’s lead. Until that time the parents that birthed us and raise us and feed us, are the directors of our lives. Our will is to be directly in line with their will, and their will should be directly in line with God’s. This is not always the case, but does not change the fact as to what God’s will is. No matter where our lives lead us, we must always honor our parents, and show them the utmost respect.
We must obey God. We must pray to Him and speak to Him through His Son Jesus Christ. And as He gives us leading we must follow, so His will can be done on earth. This can be done with out dishonor to our flesh parents and will benefit all when God is leading.
This sometimes becomes difficult for the parents to let go, and for the children to define the difference between honor and obey, but when you look at these Scriptures it lets us see a clear difference.
If parents and their children will have faith in Jesus and His promises, they will, allow God’s Will, to be done.
Not only does this take pressure off of children, but the parents as well. And make God’s yoke light, as it should be.
