This story really sums it up! Good work, Mike.
October 6, 2004 at 12:07 pm in reply to: Has the bowl of soup taken place of your birthright? #18906JimmyParticipantAnother thing regarding soup…
Isn’t it always the ploy of whatever soup company is trying to sell you their soup (Campbell’s, Progresso, etc.) to make it seem like it’s what you’ve been missing? Soup is associated with warmth, love, compassion, feelings of goodness. But what’s different from the soup of deceit and the nourishment of God’s love is that when the soup is gone, it’s gone. God’s love keeps us nourished eternally; soup is only so long.
JimmyParticipantFinally! I’ve been trying to make heads or tails of this story for some time. I have always found this story confusing, seeing how God doesn’t want us to NOT have things. Jesus wasn’t telling the man to get rid of what he had; He was just testing the man to see if he could really set a price to his precious possessions. As it says in the story, the man just couldn’t bear the thought of putting God before what he had. He had to simply walk away in sadness. Thank God that I read this post; it finally revealed to me a truth to the story I’d overlooked.
JimmyParticipantNot really much to add, save that this message is one of the most important on the site. If we don’t believe, we surely won’t receive. The power of prayer is largely in our ability to believe that we will receive that for which we pray.
JimmyParticipantCowboys are an American Icon for a very specific reason. We have images of Gene Autrey, Roy Rogers, and the Lone Ranger stuck in our head because we immediately identify with their noble struggle. When a cowboy rides the range, he is virtually alone. He has the herd and/or his horse and his own weary mind to keep him company. At some time or another, as Beaver has written here, we, and those we know, feel as though we are all alone with little companionship. It’s not a position most of us envy; it is after a little while of being alone that we realize exactly what’s wrong with it; we have to be alone.
The only thing I could think of as I read this post was the Eagles’ song.Desperado
Why don’t you come to your senses?
You’ve been out riding fences
for so long now
Oh, you’re a hard one
I know that you’ve got your reasons
These things that are pleasing you
Will hurt you somehowDon’t draw the queen of diamonds, boy
she’ll beat you if she’s able
you know the queen of hearts is always your best bet
Now it seems to me some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can’t getDesperado
Oh you ain’t getting no younger
Your pain and your hunger
are driving you home
and freedom, Lord, freedom
that’s just some people talking
your prison is walking
through this world all aloneAnd don’t your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won’t snow and the sun won’t shine
It’s hard to tell the nighttime from the day
You’re loosing all your highs and lows
Ain’t it funny how the feeling goes away?Desperado
Why don’t you come to your senses
come down from your fences
and open the gate
It may be raining
but there’s a rainbow up above you
You better let somebody love you
before it’s too late.Beaver’s cowboy was chasing the things he couldn’t get; the devil’s empty, vague promises always beyond our grasp. Eventually, however, he did realize that he needed to let somebody love him, and luckily it wasn’t too late. He opened the gateway to his heart and Jesus entered in and shone his love. God bless this cowboy, who gave so much to our family and loved the Lord. Praise Jesus for his presence; as Beaver said, he is up in Heaven training those horses. And even a rough and tumble cowboy can find some time to help a beautiful little girl climb on the back of her own little pony. Even now, I can see them, riding in a land of silver clouds and silent stars.
JimmyParticipantI know that the Devil is the father of deceit. But what sort of miracles does he trick us into doing for him? Is there an example you could cite? I’ve looked through the Bible, and I thought immediately of Satan’s tempting of Christ (telling him to turn rocks to bread, telling him to jump off a roof and let angels catch him). Is that the sort of miracle you’re talking about? Or is it like you and a group of people building a church and using it for personal gain (this example I thought up, thinking it might be in that vein). I’m just a little foggy here.
JimmyParticipantWhat an amazing post…it says just about everything that needs to be said. It’s incredible how you managed to use your “The World” statements, because most of the people who reject God and Jesus Christ say these same things. They’ve been listening to the loudest, most absurd voice and they take it as truth. The real truth is not blaring in the background…it is waiting to be passed along in a calm, loving voice. This post is a good reminder of exactly what Christians need to be on the look out for, and what to respond with in kind.
JimmyParticipantTom, you’re speaking the truth. I thought back after I read this message about all the times I had gained things from God and all the times I missed the opportunity to repay his goodness in my deed. Most every Christian, new, old, or otherwise, has come across this; we take and take and we don’t repay, even with the knowledge of what was paid for us.
Since the site started, i’ve been a little more eager to show God’s goodness with each day’s worth of scripture and lessons. Let’s hope that the word gets around and more people see the way to go.
Ask not what God can do for you; ask what you can do for GOD!May 31, 2004 at 2:45 pm in reply to: Do you want to know a secret about the God you run from? #18776JimmyParticipantI was watching…I think it was Malcom in the MIddle, and the brothers on that show were selling things from the Church’s charity drive for cash for themselves. They had all the stuff they took in a van and they were taking it back when they were struck from behind by another vehicle. The youngest brother screamed:
“IT’S GOD! HE FOUND US!”
I couldn’t stop laughing at that. I suppose it was the thought that God was “on the hunt”. A lot of people feel this way, I suppose. If we could only get everyone on Earth on this site, they’d see what its really about, though.
JimmyParticipantAmen! Glory to Jesus!
JimmyParticipantBeav,
I knew the Holy Spirit would shout it out to you! When I read this post, the only thing I could think of was that tattoo passage from Leviticus. The thing is, however, that I couldn’t find anything against body markings in the New Testament. I did, however, find that bit about Jesus and the old laws. I knew there was something that would make a tattoo/marking okay, but I wasn’t sure where I could find it. How cool is it that the answer was there in the subtext? I think that’s pretty awesome, and you’re right. When you do things in Jesus’ Holy Name, you do them in mind of the living and NOT the dead. As it says in Matthew 8: 22
But Jesus said unto them“Follow me, and let the dead bury the dead.”
Thanks Beav for a nice bout of conversation! I think a little point/counterpoint makes things interesting. There were a LOT of views for this post!
JimmyParticipantBeaver-
I researched this topic and wondered if you could have any insight. Both Old and New Testament seem to be against tattoos, if you follow these two passages;
Leviticus 19:28-Never cut your bodies in mourning for the dead or mark your skin with tattoos. I am the Lord thy God.
Matthew 5: 17-19 = Do not misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to fulfill them. I assure you, until heaven and earth disappear, even the smallest detail of God’s law will remain until its purpose is achieved. So if you break the smallest commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches thtem will be great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
This was my own bit of research. I’m sure that you’ll be able to find a rebutle, but I was curious when I read this passage.
Maybe you can find something to counter these verses?
JimmyParticipantSorry folks…I got a wire crossed. I put “Parable” when I meant “testimony” or “account”. Jesus’ walking on the water is found in Matthew, Mark, and Luke, but only Matthew goes into distinct detail regarding Peter going to Jesus. That three of the gospels tell about this particular event certifies that it was real, and that it, in fact, was not a parable. Sorry about any confusion due to my little linguistic mix-up.
JimmyParticipantFirst, I need to take this opportunity to thank everyone here at AT THE RIGHT HAND.NET for coming to The Wall. Our Saturday show went well, but I really would’ve wanted you to see the Sunday show. The whole play went off without a hitch and we had most of the cafeteria filled. While some of the students that came cared solely about the extra credit points that our coach (their teacher) offered, the majority of them came and told Chris and myself that they genuinely enjoyed the play. There were many tears and lessons learned, and when all was said and done we were happy with the end result. I think we really got through to people and showed exactly what Jesus had to suffer through for our sake.
That leads me into my point…as I came off of the stage for the Sunday show, I was speaking with a person from my church. They wondered how I could get into such a revolting character as the one I played. I told them “Now that I know what it’s like on the other side of God, I’m glad I’m on the side I chose.” I’m sure that, when given a side-by-side, most people would appreciate how their life with God is better than a life without Him. Praise God for good shows, thoughtful messages, and the life I’ve chosen.JimmyParticipantThe stage is set. Two men are sitting together in a cramped, terrible cell. The only thing that brings them together is their fear of what is to come, and the thing that separates them is a wall. A wall between their perceptions, a wall between their hearts and minds, and a wall between them and a savior that only one of them is willing to tear down by any means.
The Wallis here. Are you?
Looking forward to the arrival of the ATRH folks. Come on down!
