In the movie Pirates of the Caribbean, Captain Jack Sparrow tells another character that you can ,”Trust a dishonest man to be dishonest.” and that “It’s the honest man that you need to watch out for because you never know when they might be dishonest.”
In the movie, it is used as a joke, but in reality it makes a lot of sense. Just as the bible says not to remove yourselves from sinners, but remove yourself from those that say they are righteous and are not.
For the same reason that Aaron’s staff turned into a snake just as pharoah’s magicians, but it then swallowed the other two snakes. It was not the appearance of the snake that mattered, but what it did.
You can trust a sinner to sin. But the only way you can tell a true follower of Christ is to see their actions and their fruits, they will use their words to make you think that they are righteous, but their actions show that they truely are wolves in sheep’s clothing.
As Christians trusting in God, the truth sets us free from those imposters we can see the lies and misgivings that follow so that we may guard ourselves from them. You can trust a sinner to sin. But the imposters are the ones that you need to watch out for.
