I was on my way home from college this past Friday when, twenty miles from my exit, I got a flat. This flat was not your average, run-of-the-mill flat, however. It was a blowout. My tire exploded, the wall and the tread separating and dropping my car down to the rim. I managed to get across three lanes of traffic unscathed, and got my car to the shoulder. There, I called my Dad who, luckily, was not at work.
After asking how I was and the condition of the car, Dad then instructed me to get the tire off and put on the spare. He walked me through, step by step, reassuring me and making sure I was doing things the right way. Within a few minutes, I was back on four solid tires and ready to drive home.
The tire experience reminded me of two things. I was reminded of God’s power. 95 is a terrible highway; there are lots of bad drivers and plenty of traffic to go around for everyone. Still, I was able to get across three lanes and get set up on a flat shoulder to change the tire. Had you seen this tire, you’d have thrown me an “Amen” on that note; it was absolutely destroyed.
The experience was also a model of how God works. I called on my Dad to help me, but when it came down to it, I was the one who had to change the tire. God has given us a similar situation; he gives us the instruction and the support and the love; we have to live it. When it comes down to it, we have to do what we do every day. God does not just do things for us; he does them through us and through others.
When I got back on the road, I thanked God in Jesus Name for protection, for power, and for the ability to get back home.
